PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by James M. Haught
Two years have rolled by rapidly and my term as President of SPI is near an end. I cannot remember being an “Immediate Past” President although I suppose that I was at some time or another. Anyway, I am looking forward to giving you my annual report at the 31st Annual Meeting on September 19. I am also looking forward to the reports of our committee and sub committee chairs. They and their committees have worked exceptionally hard this year.
As you will see in a report enclosed in this newsletter, there has been a great deal of activity focused on two houses located at 564 and 602 Washington. Frankly, saving one of them does not look good at this point despite intense effort by a lot of people, especially Betsy Donovan. It is hard to point a finger at what is going wrong, but, needless to say, nobody is coming up with the funds to save them. Beyond that, SPI has spent the past two years under Martha Mayo’s leadership attempting to bring recognition to the South End’s historical and architectural importance. For BIW and the Navy to destroy two more houses is really a slap in the face for SPI’s efforts and further threatens an already shaky area. I encourage our members to attend the Annual Meeting on September 19th at the Winter Street Center from 5:30 P.M. to 7 P.M. to hear Betsy’s comments on this matter.
I will hold further comments for the president’s report at the annual meeting.
Please plan on attending to hear our wonderful achievements over this past year.
